ENGLISH PHRASAL VERBS.

07 Abril 2019 02

Autor: Verónica Amaro Bermejo

Sometimes English phrasal verbs make sense… but another time, they seem totally random.

Phrasal verbs open up a new world of possibilities for speaking English.  They are used often in everyday conversation, so it´s very important that you know them

But, what is a phrasal verb? It is a phrase that’s made up of a verb and another word or two, usually a preposition but sometimes an adverb.

Phrasal verbs work by changing the verb’s meaning based on the preposition that follows them.

You probably already know a number of phrasal verbs. English phrasal verbs are everywhere, so one of the best ways to learn them is to try to listen for them. These phrases are commonly used, and would not be unusual to hear in a conversation. Do you hear a verb used together with another word very often? It might be a phrasal verb.

COMMON MISTAKES IN ENGLISH!

06 Marzo 2019

Autor: Jimena González Sanz.

Hello again everyone! Here we are again, and this time we want to present some of the most common mistakes most of us make when writing or speaking. Keep on reading because sometimes overusing might have made you not realize you are one us so let´s begin!

HOW vs WHAT. It is quite common that whenever we think and translate a sentence such as ¿cómo se dice ….? and think How is the word…. in English? Instead, you should say what is the word…. in English? Alternatively you can say, How do you say…..in English?

TAKE vs HAVE. In English it is used have and not take when you refer to a drink, it can be a coffee, a beer or a glass of soda. You´d better use have and not take unless you want to be chased by the waiters.

DO vs MAKE. It is very difficult to distinguish for Spanish speakers because hacer is always the same in Spanish but to make it a little clearer we could say that DO is used for an action or a job while MAKE can be the synonym of CREATE / PRODUCE. For example, we do not say DO the bed, MAKE sport, DO a cake or DO a mistake but MAKE THE BED; DO sport, MAKE a cake and MAKE a mistake.

Popular English Idioms to Sound Like a Native Speaker.

05 Febrero 2019 1

To understand English as it is spoken in real life, you have to be familiar with idioms. English idioms are a group of words whose meaning isn’t obvious from looking at the individual words.

You need to learn what they mean, and how to use them. They have developed over time and so they might seem random to you.

Learning common idioms in English will help you fit in with most situations, whether it’s at a basketball game, over a beer, studying or going out on a date.

The key to understanding English idioms is never to read them in a literal sense. You need to learn them in context so you can understand their true meaning.

I will show you some of the most popular English idioms currently in use.

VISIT LONDON!

04 Enero 2019 1

Autor: Jimena González Sanz.

Welcome back to our English section! First of all we want to wish you a Happy New Year 2019! As you know it is time for new years resolutions and what is best than proposing yourself for an exciting adventure like visiting new parts of London or London if you have not already visited yet.

Whenever you go, you cannot forget to visit the exciting and free Museum of Natural Science, the British museum and the National Gallery (I do also recommend you to go to St. Patrick´s Cathedral, which is free if you visit durin mass time). You must take a walk on both sides of the river Thames. You can start from the Tower of London and then cross through Tower bridge visiting the town hall and stopping to take a lunch at Borough Market. Once the energies have been charged then take a glimpse of the most popular theatre: the Globe, stop at the Tate Gallery grab a coffee and appreciate its Art works, then enjoy London´s views from the Eye and if you are not tired enough visit the aquarium next to it. Then you can cross the Thames through Westminster Bridge and enjoy the Big Ben, The House of Parliaments and Westminsters Abbey. Hyde Park is great during sunny days and it is next to Buckingham Palace a must when you plan to visit London for the first time. If you enjoy shopping you cannot forget to visit Carnaby Street, the market of Portobello road on Saturdays and The Candem (not to mention the super expensive Harrods.) This is, however, one side of London everybody is familiar with (or at least ever heard about it!)

MUST AND HAVE TO.

02 NOVEIMBRE 11

Autor: Jimena González Sanz

Hello againg! Today I want to focus on the differences between must and have to. Many English learners have some problems when deciding which one to use. So today, I want to approach to both of them and maybe enlighten you.

Basically “must”  mean an internal obligation that the person speaking feels. It is like saying “I feel it is necessary to do something”. For example, “I must start doing exercise ”, which means, “I feel it is necessary for me to exercise because it is good for my heath.” ; “ You must finish your work before 3 pm” , which means,  “ I think it is necessary that you finish this before 3pm”, “She must stop smoking”, which means , “I think it is necessary that she stops smoking because it is bad for her health.”
